Climbing Trees:
This 30 day performance has been at times endurance, meditative, personal, political, religious, historical, local, universal, and usually all of the above. I’ve been reading The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino, and I feel a certain kinship with the hero of that story, Cosimo. In the story, Cosimo refuses to accept the life imposed on him and instead creates a whole new path of life lived entirely in the trees. For him it is pure rebellion that sends him up the tree, and part stubbornness, part curiosity, part love, that keeps him there; all-in-all it is his refusal to accept a life as others say it must be. He is determined to find a way where others claim it is impossible, and within this self-imposed restriction a whole new freedom is found.
